An Australian first in renewable energy receives approval to energise

WGE collaborates on cutting-edge renewable energy generation & pool heating system

The Fremantle Aquatic Centre (WA) heating project is the first in Australia to utilise cutting-edge renewable technology and combine a cogeneration unit with a ground source heat pump to warm the pool. Wood & Grieve officially obtained Western Power’s approval to energise on 2 February 2015.

The new pool heating system has been assessed as providing optimal payback and carbon offset to the City of Fremantle. Pool heating efficiency and reduced operational costs are achieved through the combination of the following technologies:

  • 75 kW “MiracleGen” Cummins engine cogeneration system
  • Ground source heat pump with a shallow geothermal bore system

Wood & Grieve Engineers (WGE) were initially engaged by Energy Made Clean (EMC) to assist with the preliminary design and electrical infrastructure upgrade to accommodate the cogeneration plant.

Following the appointment of Evo Industries Australia by the City of Fremantle for the project’s design refinement and construction, WGE were further engaged for their specialist knowledge in parallel power generation to assist Evo Industries with the protection design and authority approvals.

The project won the 2014 SPLASH (Swimming Pool & Spa Association Australia) award for most environmentally friendly project.
