Video reflects on Perth’s evolving transformation and future direction
WGE has today launched a video reflecting on how Perth has changed over the last ten years, and the exciting possibilities for the future of the city.
The video was featured at the Property Council of Australia’s outlook lunch, bringing together industry experts to discuss the year ahead for property in WA.
The video features:
- Lisa Scaffidi, Lord Mayor of Perth
- Chris Palandri, President of the Property Council of Australia (WA)
- Nic MacCormac, winner of #designperth, Associate at Cox Howlett + Bailey Woodland
- Brett Davis, Director & Perth Office Manager, WGE
Lisa Scaffidi believes Perth has undergone an attitudinal shift over the last ten years.
“We actually have greater faith and belief in our ability and that is helping us to be more confident moving forward,” she said.
Chris Palandri commented that recent developments in Perth have changed the face of the city. “Brookfield Place, the Treasury Building and the recently opened Elizabeth Quay have helped to make Perth a much better, more positive and progressive place to live.”
Looking to the future, Brett Davis said that embracing technology is the key to success.
“We have to be able to embrace what the future will bring and grab those opportunities. Modular construction, 3D and building information modelling is the way forward,” he said.

WGE helps City of Gosnells to achieve Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star Rating for Public Building Design v1
Wood & Grieve Engineers (WGE) provided structural design services for construction of the Mills Park Community Centre in Perth’s south-east which has recently been awarded Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star rating for Public Building Design.
The facility includes a hall and function centre, commercial kitchen and café, meeting rooms and activity spaces, indoor play area, clubroom and changing rooms for sporting groups and office space for staff.
The WGE team worked with architects Hodge Collard Preston to ensure that the design exceeded the Green Star criteria and operating costs were kept to a minimum.
Structural design features include:
- Reinforcement and steel sourced from accredited mills with valid ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
- Cement was replaced with fly-ash in the concrete mix
- Grey and black water recycling and re-use
- Stormwater drainage and flood systems
- Fire pumps and tanks
- Water efficiency management
WGE’s structural team worked with the sustainability consultant to ensure building materials were selected to maximise green credits towards the building’s overall rating. The water saving measures implemented will save up to 250,000 litres of potable water each year and the facility is expected to use up to 70 per cent less water than comparable developments.
WGE helps deliver a first for public hygiene
WGE has helped to deliver Australia’s first retractable or ‘pop-up’ urinal in the City of Perth’s busy Northbridge entertainment precinct.
The innovative design, utilised in cities throughout Europe to improve street hygiene, sits hidden below ground during the day and rises into place when late night crowds are at their peak. The urilift houses three self-cleaning urinals and is operated with a remote control.
WGE provided civil, electrical and hydraulics services on the project. The brownfield site contained a number of shallow services including gas, trunk water mains and telecommunications crossing the 60m long proposed gravity sewer alignment.
WGE carried out preliminary design and worked closely with the appointed contractor during construction phase to overcome any unknown obstacles, ensuring design objectives were met.
The pop-up urinal is an Australian first, and was recently featured on Seven’s Sunrise program.
