Baldivis shopping centre expansion

The $116 million expansion of Baldivis Shopping Centre is a key strategic development by Stockland in the Baldivis and Rockingham regions of WA. The retail hub expansion quadruples the Centre’s net lettable area from 7,000m2 to 29,500m2 and includes an impressive range of major retail outlets as well as close to 100 specialty stores, 1400 parking spaces and a restaurant terrace.

Healthcare centres require engineering experience as demonstrated at Baldivis Shopping CentreWood & Grieve's retail experience includes retail projects and major commercial shopping centres such as Baldivis Shopping Centre.

Wood & Grieve Engineers (WGE) were contracted to deliver this major retail development project with tight constraints around schedule as the new development was due to be open for trading 12-15 months from the start of construction.

From early design stage the WGE structural & civil teams have been driving this project with technically innovative design solutions.

To overcome the risks associated with the construction being adjacent to the Alcoa high pressure gas main, the WGE team pushed for Manta Ray soil anchors and reinforced earth retention systems to be employed. Additionally, to maximise structural efficiency the team implemented a post-tensioned beam and slab system in the roof and deck carport.

Additional project features of note at the Baldivis Shopping Centre include:

  • 8m tall retaining wall adjacent a major high pressure gas main.
  • Efficiencies gained through engaging with an array of shop detailers early to maximise design efficiencies.
  • Innovative Joint Free Slabs were used for the major retail base slabs.
  • Logistical planning with the development built within an extremely tight construction programme.

Retail centers must be flexible and expandable in order to meet tenant requirements and shopper expectations. Wood & Grieve’s retail team has worked on hundreds of retail projects including Ocean Keys, Rockingham City Shopping Centre and the Central Precinct Retail Building.
