Property industry heavyweights have stepped up to create a new world-first facility supporting homeless youth in partnership with the Victorian government. The centre, at 19 King Street in Melbourne’s CBD, has offered a safe haven to young people in crisis for almost 30 years. Higher learning: Prahran High School

The below article is courtesy of AIRAH’s July edition of Ecolibrium; first published 18 July 2018 Property prices, high-density residential development and a resurgence in inner-city living have combined to influence major changes in traditional school design. As Sean McGowan reports, vertical schools solve the problem of land availability but bring with them challenges more akin to commercial development. Like many others, I grew up in the outer suburbs within close walking distance to my state primary school. Built in the 1920s in an area once considered rural, my “alma mater” occupied a 2ha site that became surrounded by brick …

Why wood buildings stack up

“Developers are looking for an extra edge that helps them get to market quicker and more affordably. Timber is that edge.” In cities of glittering glass, steel and concrete, the idea of timber buildings may seem reactionary. But a revolution is upon us as timber buildings tall and small crop up around the world. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, there are more than 50 timber towers proposed, under construction or operational globally. Among these are 5 King in Brisbane and Forté in Melbourne, both projects developed by Lendlease. In May Lendlease promised to build in …

Shining a light on design creativity

Studies show that lighting has a direct effect on people’s emotions, both positively and negatively. Not only that, it can effect productivity and energy levels, so it should come as no surprise that organisations are taking a closer look at their office lighting options. The amount of natural versus artificial light, energy saving opportunities, large and small spaces – there is a lot to consider when designing a project’s lighting. According to Wood & Grieve Engineers’ (WGE) Specialist Lighting Project Engineer Jean-Paul Kirkland, there’s also another option to consider: how it looks. “Lighting is more than just a functional feature, …

Cutting through the construction noise

Noise may be an occupational hazard on construction sites. But new technology from Wood & Grieve Engineers (WGE) eliminates the endless engineers’ reports and puts noise control in the palm of the client’s hand. You can hear a pin drop at 10 decibels and a whisper at 30. A jackhammer assaults the ears at 110 decibels and a thunderclap shocks the senses at 120. Noise is highly subjective and what is acceptable to one person may be irritating to another. But anything above 50 decibels is generally considered noisy – whether that’s in a buzzing workplace or a quiet suburb …

Density done well

Density done well means working closely with the local community. This is the lesson to learn from Blackburne Aria Swanbourne, WA’s RLB Development of the Year. Building owner and developer Blackburne took home the Property Council’s prestigious award recently for a 156-apartment complex that balances luxury and affordability. According to the Property Council’s executive director Lino Iacomella, the project “demonstrates how density, when well delivered, can add value to a local community”. “The judges were impressed with the standard of design and amenity, and with the developer’s commitment to engage with the community and local residents during the construction period,” …

Solar solutions enjoying time in the sun

As the famous poem so eloquently states, we love our sunburnt country – a place which, on average, receives between six and 11 hours of sunlight per day. It’s also no surprise that Australia’s average sunlight increases between October and April. With that kind of natural resource on tap, Australian businesses and households have jumped on board Solar Energy solutions with solar PV panels the obvious popular choice. And there is no better time to get on board the solar train than right now. A record 3.5 million panels were installed on Australian household rooftops in 2017, giving the …
