Congratulations to winners of the Victorian Architecture Awards

Winners of the 2017 Victorian Architecture Awards were announced recently with two WGE projects recognised.

The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) by the sthDI + MCR architectural consortium was acknowledged as one of Victoria’s notable public buildings winning the Victorian Medal and the William Wardell Award for Public Architecture.

The Centre is a purpose-built centre-of-excellence for cancer research, treatment, care and education. The $1 billion, 130,000m2 facility is the new home of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, new cancer research and clinical services for Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne.

One of the largest inner city residential developments in Australia, Upper West Side by Cottee Parker Architects received a Commendation for Urban Design. WGE provided Electrical, Fire Engineering, Hydraulics, Mechanical, Specialist Lighting, Sustainability and Vertical Transportation disciplines.

WGE’s Grant Holman congratulated all projects recognised in the awards.

“The bar for architecture is set very high in Melbourne and we are constantly inspired and driven by the visionary architects we work with,” he said.

“We are very proud to have helped deliver two landmark projects – VCCC and Upper West Side.”

Vanessa Bird, Victorian Chapter President, said this year there is a focus on designing healthy, liveable spaces.

“Living and working in well-designed buildings influences the way we think and feel; it inspires and uplifts us, promotes wellbeing and health and can bring us together in new ways,” she said.

“The value of good architecture is about creating places for people.”

The full list of award winners and commendations is available online. State winners will compete in the National Architecture Awards announced in November.
