Iconic Kings Square redevelopment in Fremantle

Structural, mechanical and fire services engineering on the iconic Kings Square redevelopment in Fremantle, WAWestern Australia’s city of Fremantle can expect a striking transformation with the creation of a new $45 million civic and community hub as part of the broader $220 million Kings Square Project. As one of the largest new developments to be undertaken in Fremantle this project will reshape the heart of Fremantle with the inclusion of relaxed public spaces, a more formal civic centre and innovative inclusion of the heritage Town Hall.

Wood & Grieve Engineers (WGE) is consulting on the structural, mechanical and fire design aspects with Kerry Hill Architects, who won the Kings Square Architectural Competition with their unique conceptual plan for the civic centre.

An iconic development of this size requires engineering innovation and technical experience. WGE’s structural team is currently investigating a broad range of options for the multi-use development.

The confined site location within the heart of bustling Fremantle creates some interesting challenges for the whole project team. Regardless of the challenge the engineering design will incorporate some interesting features at the Kings Square development such as:

  • Long span roof
  • Minimal columns within floor plates
  • Architectural incorporation with existing heritage buildings including the Town Hall

The team at Wood & Grieve is excited to put their finely honed skills and passion to work on this project and further add to the firm’s long history of engineering consultation on renowned Australian commercial and civic projects. Notable recent projects include Elizabeth Quay, Treasury Building, Blundstone Arena, and Raine Square.
