Inaugural BIMWest event showcases the future of building modelling software

Western Australia’s property industry is putting the focus directly on opportunities to increase project efficiency and cost reduction through BIM software. Case studies and user advantages were showcased at the inaugural BIMWest event, held on 11 February at the new 6 star Green Star Greenskills building at the Central Institute of Technology, WA.

BIMWest is the brainchild of the committee that bought us the Western Australian Revit Users Group (WARUG).

Keynote speaker Richard Mann, Executive Director of Strategic Projects & Asset Sales, Department of Treasury, demonstrated that the Western Australian BIM movement is ahead of its field globally and gave users confidence that BIM is being taken seriously in our industry. The Perth Children’s Hospital project provided a live case study for discussion of BIM implementation and the benefits for future major projects.

Professor Peter E.D. Love from Curtin University and Craig Muir from GHD provided the audience with insights into the incorporation of invisible systems into working BIM models, whether it be the relationship between Power/Comms/IT/Security or in-ground infrastructure into 3D designs.

The inside scoop from the recent ‘Revit Gunslinger’ event was provided by Michael Ruehr from Hassell Architects, following his involvement in this invitation-only Autodesk event.

After discussion of the possibilities of new BIM features, which one most interested Wood & Grieve’s BIM focus group? The low cost solutions to hand held scanning devices for the instantaneous creation of a 3D point cloud, sent to the cloud, for use in modeling.

From the perspective of the consulting engineer, Wood & Grieve have been deeply involved in the BIM user community and have been an early adopter of the technology.
