The Glades at Byford is the largest new master-planned community in the south-eastern corridor of Perth. Situated at the foot of the Darling escarpment and priding itself on being a leader in sustainable development and design principles, it is the first WA development to achieve an UDIA Enviro Development certification in three categories, namely Eco Systems, Community and Water.

At completion the estate will have 3,500 lots and will include a primary school, district high school, a proposed Catholic K-12 school and a village centre with shops, offices and cafes.

WGE provided civil consulting services to the Glades that have enabled the retention of existing creek lines, trees with road reserves and public open space (POS) areas, whilst still achieving the desired site classification. Works for this project have included:

    • Upgrade of existing rural roads
    • Operation of a sand quarry
    • Offsite water main extensions
    • Construction of a lake within the Village Centre precinct
    • School site development
    • A sewer pumping station

This project won ‘The Resource Management Award’ at the 2012 Australian Water Association WA Water Awards with the judges noting that this nomination, “demonstrated a strong application of sustainability and water efficient principles, with the best focus on community education and broader benefit”.

The broad range of integrated water management initiatives implemented included:

    • Minimising changes to the natural watercourses traversing the site
    • Applying water sensitive design principles
    • Installing rainwater tanks and water wise gardens in each residence

The natural environment has been considered in every aspect of the design, from the retention of existing trees, enhancing the natural waterways to provide a habitat for local fauna and embracing the latest technology in water sensitive design.
