Structural Project Engineer, Principal

Office: Perth

Disciplines:
Structural

Gary’s early career was spent in the UK prior to his emigration to Australia in 2009 when he joined WGE’s Structural team; quickly progressing to Project Engineer and subsequent appointment as a Principal of the firm in 2012. Adding value to projects through a pragmatic approach, Gary has a wealth of experience accrued over the last 20 years from a varied and interesting project list, ranging from shopping centres in Perth metro to mining camps in the Pilbara, and the brand new Integrated Marine Operation Centre in Port Hedland.

With a ‘can-do’ attitude, Gary enjoys the role as project lead and co-ordinator, encouraging a proactive, collaborative and relaxed team vibe; bringing parties together to find common understanding for the benefit of the client’s goals. Undertaking projects across many sectors, Gary has worked closely with manufacturers in China and Vietnam to develop and expand the capabilities of modular solutions, developing methodologies for construction to ensure production is compliant for the Australian market. In addition to extensive retail exposure, his remit includes Heritage projects and he has worked on numerous unusual assignments around Regional WA.

What will you bring to a project

I particularly relish the start of the project lifecycle; looking at the structure’s build-ability and taking account of the location, constraints, budget and timescale, then picking it all apart to identify a pathway through to construction. It’s like a giant problem to be solved and the greater the challenge, the better. There is a great sense of satisfaction from seeing a building used as envisioned and knowing I was integral to its existence.

Outside work

Outside the work environment Gary spends the majority of his time with his young family helping them pursue their sporting ambitions in soccer. Prior to immigrating to Australia Gary competed as an elite athlete in UK and at international level over a 20 year career in athletics.

During all phases or our recent project located in Karratha, SPH Architects have been impressed by the service and support Gary Sollitt, Michelle Latham and the team of professional structural engineers has offered.

Whilst the standard of technical service by WGE impressed, SPH Architects have especially appreciate the high level of consultation, communication ad availability provided by the WGE team.

Keith Fragomelli, Scot Penn Hall

I'd like to express my thanks to Gary and his team for the excellent work he has done. The day to day assistance the team has provided has been exceptional. However, the depth of information provided for the submission is far and above what I could have hoped for. It ties in extremely well with the focus our bid is taking, and Gary has done a fantastic job capturing that and relaying it in your submission materials, it has been a pleasure working with such a professional team.
