Structural Section Manager, Director

Office: Perth

Disciplines:
Structural

Joining Wood & Grieve Engineers in 1996, Rowan has played a significant role in the growth of the company from 50 to 600 staff around Australia and has been personally responsible for establishing the Melbourne Structural Section and growing the Perth Structural Section over the last 16 years. His confident project management skills have been honed over 25 years within the industry - interstate and international - across Education, Commercial, Industrial and Institutional/Public sectors.

A registered builder himself, Rowan offers a unique insight into construction considerations and adopts a hands-on and practical approach to engineering design that benefits both client and contractor. Rowan values his client relationships highly and can be relied upon to provide attentive service levels, blending experience with technical fluency to deliver successful projects through affable leadership and clear communication.

His specialist skillset includes forensic engineering and expert witness work, but Rowan is equally passionate about heritage engineering, where he has an impressive portfolio of successful restorations. He also performs wider corporate responsibilities as a director, is the remote manager for WGE’s office in China and chairs WGE’s national risk management committee alongside his primary role, leading the Perth Structural team.

What will you bring to a project

I particularly enjoy the tangible and enduring aspects of structural engineering; creating a building that is used and appreciated by the community, or repurposing a heritage structure that might otherwise become derelict – that’s so rewarding. Knowing that good engineering can make a difference to project outcomes and the people involved is what drives me to delve into client objectives to find ways to add genuine value - understanding the big picture and being aware of the commercial realities is fundamental to the service offered.

Outside work

Rowan is a compulsive builder and handyman outside of work, committed family man (three young boys), enjoys a good wine and indulges his musical passions as lead guitarist and vocalist in the much vaunted blues, rock band – The Subdividers (www.thesubdividersband.com)! He will travel the world in search of the right guitar…

Client testimonials

I would like to express our appreciation of the exceptional service offered by Wood & Grieve Engineers in providing the Structural Engineering Consultancy for the project.

…Rowan, your personal approach through the documentation and construction phases over a sustained period was impressive and was not at all compromised by your position of seniority at Wood and Grieve Engineers.

Ben Yap, Port Bouvard Limited

A number of unforseen site issues emerged during the course of the construction, particularly during the foundation stage. Rowan and his team were quick to attend site, provide clear advice and work with us to resolve any issues during this critical phase. The same proactive approach was taken through to completion of the structure.

Where documentation was contradicting between consultants W&G; were quick to provide answers and solutions to prevent any delays to the works on site. The quality of construction documentation was good and served to minimise the number of site queries and any frustration that we may have otherwise experienced.

On behalf of Doric, I would like to thank you for your assistance and pro-activeness during the project. The rapid responses and collaborative attitude shown throughout the project were invaluable and instrumental in enabling Doric to successfully deliver this iconic building.

Michael van Dongen, Doric
