This project involved a 592.64kW solar PV system for Ellenbrook North Senior School - one of the largest rooftop installations on the Western Power Network, generating enough electricity to power 150 homes.

WGE designed the electrical protection, interconnection and controls system in relation to the solar PV system.

The team also completed the application for grid connection of the power station and obtained approval from Western Power for unconstrained access to their network. WGE supervised the system commissioning and produced design and as-constructed drawings for the entire system.

Project features:

  • The project is one of the largest rooftop solar PV systems connected to the Western Power network
  • The design included the installation of 1,850 solar panels
  • Annual electricity generation forecast is estimated at 979,600kWh
  • CO2-e abatement per year is estimated at 770 tonnes

Project challenges:

  • The arrays were distributed over multiple building roof tops, requiring a centralised protection and control system to remotely control all individual sub-systems. This was overcome with a remotely accessible ELV control system, master controlled for the school’s site main switchboard.
  • The application process was very challenging as this system was assessed as a ‘small power station’. WGE have extensive experience in negotiating the connection of large commercial PV systems such as this.
