The Joondalup Health Campus was completed in 2013 and was heralded as one of the biggest hospitals in Western Australia. WGE has been delighted to have been involved in the landmark project, which was delivered ahead of the project program and on budget – a massive win for all the stakeholders.

The $390 million redevelopment has been a vital upgrade which will service the healthcare needs of the northern suburbs communities well into the future.

Key components of the development included:

  • Increase in public bed numbers to 505 beds
  • A new 145 bed private hospital
  • A new state-of-the-art emergency department
  • 12 operating theatres

In addition to the functional objectives, the redevelopment targeted a ‘best practice’ standard of sustainability with a particular focus on energy efficiency and on initiatives that provided value for money. The WGE sustainability team worked closely with the design team and the builder to develop an options assessment supported by a full cost benefit analysis. This was an essential part of meeting the budget control requirements for the project while maintaining the sustainability focus.

One of the key challenges for the project involved the numerous stages for the redevelopment which was delivered across a 4 year period. This required a sustainability strategy and approach which was holistic to capture site wide attributes but also allowed for discretion to align with the staging plan. As well as the sustainability options assessment, WGE successfully managed the associated budget allocated. The management systems developed from this project are now applied to all WGE projects which ensure that innovation in sustainability is achieved while maintaining financial viability.

Winner: This project received the ‘WA Environmental Award’ in 2012 for setting a new standard in construction waste recycling. WGE were proud to be part of this project and would like to congratulate everyone involved, particularly the John Holland Group as they were officially recognised in the category of ‘Corporate Business Leading by Example’ – a fantastic outcome.
