Latrobe Regional Hospital Gippsland Cancer Care Centre

The Latrobe Regional Hospital is an important facility servicing a regional population of over 240,000 people in south-east Victoria. WGE provided significant engineering expertise and innovation that has seen the capacity of the hospital be significantly improved to better service the local community.

The new facilities WGE helped deliver include:

  • The installation of a new state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (LINAC) to provide targeted cancer treatment by radiotherapy.
  • Associated custom designed LINAC bunker future-proofed (and radiation proofed) for a third LINAC.
  • Redevelopment and extension (vertical & lateral) of the existing Cancer Care building to provide more than double the floor area for chemotherapy and consultation space.

WGE were commissioned by Vincent • Chrisp Architects and provided a full scope of services to see the project progress from concept design through to construction phase. The team’s services were delivered with the trademark WGE commitment to exceptional service which ensured the new hospital facility was successfully delivered in a fully resolved and coordinated manner.

Features of the structural and civil engineering services provided include:

  • Full structural documentation in Revit to allow for enhanced visual representation and easier building coordination.
  • Creating a structural building model that was verified by the Department of Health’s Quantity Surveyor as an accurate representation of the buildings construction value – something that could not be achieved in conventional design or documentation.
  • Inclusion of environmentally sustainable design initiatives such as recycled concrete, sustainable timber, high-strength steel grades, reinforcement with high recycled steel component and structural accommodation of temperature control devices.
  • Adaptive re-use of the existing building and development of a design solution that allowed critical hospital functions to be maintained during construction.
  • Minimisation of cost and waste through decommissioning and re-use of existing structural elements.

The Latrobe Regional Hospital Gippsland Cancer Care Centre is the $22million second stage of a 5 Stage $220million master plan for the site. WGE look forward to future involvement at the site to deliver further high quality outcomes for the local communities.
