WGE provided structural design services for construction of the Mills Park Community Centre in Perth’s south-east which has been awarded Australia’s first 6 Star Green Star rating for Public Building Design.

The facility includes a hall and function centre, commercial kitchen and café, meeting rooms and activity spaces, indoor play area, clubroom and changing rooms for sporting groups and office space for staff.

The WGE team worked with architects Hodge Collard Preston to ensure that the design exceeded the Green Star criteria and operating costs were kept to a minimum.

Structural design features include:

  • Reinforcement and steel sourced from accredited mills with valid ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
  • Cement was replaced with fly-ash in the concrete mix
  • Grey and black water recycling and re-use
  • Stormwater drainage and flood systems
  • Fire pumps and tanks
  • Water efficiency management

WGE’s structural team worked with the sustainability consultant to ensure building materials were selected to maximise green credits towards the building’s overall rating. The water saving measures implemented will save up to 250,000 litres of potable water each year and the facility is expected to use up to 70 per cent less water than comparable developments.
