The Murdoch University Engineering Building was constructed to accommodate the relocation and amalgamation of research laboratories and educational facilities from multiple buildings on campus. The new structure comprised a double height laboratory with elevated walkways and platforms installed to create an interactive learning facility. In addition, the adjoining two storey teaching block was designed to facilitate various teaching requirements, allowing students to conduct experiments in the laboratory then transition into a classroom setting to review and reinforce the outcomes. A roof top teaching/lecture space was included above the laboratory.
The structural form of the teaching block is a concrete frame clad in Kimberly stone and slate tiles. The workshop is comprised of a steel frame with translucent sheets on a curved profile to introduce natural light into the open space. The roller shutter door at the rear allows large vehicle access. The laboratory space is open to maximise flexibility of use, whilst the installation of a range of lab equipment offers future-proofing for changing teaching and commercial needs over time.
