In a style reminiscent to the Northbridge Piazza, the Newman Town Square project offers a stunning community space to the heart of Newman, WA’s iron ore town in the Pilbara region. WGE was engaged to provided hydraulic, mechanical and structural services to the project.

Designed by Cameron Chisholm Nicol Architects, the Royalty for Regions funded Town Square beautifully integrates great atmosphere with contemporary architecture that is representative of the local culture. The development features an 8m x 4m elevated outdoor LED screen, with a performing stage and a landscaped forecourt, facilities that are destined to attract extraordinary live performances and community festivals.

Under tight budget constraints, the team delivered a public asset that added significant value to the regional town of Newman. An example was the use of transportable units for pop-up stores and restaurants in lieu of a traditional in situ building, offering great opportunities to reduce construction costs, save on programme and improve quality where internal fitouts were done locally in Perth.

Another feature of this project was the outdoor LED screen; the largest of its kind in WA outside of the Perth metropolitan area. The design of the screen support structure was driven by the unique specifications of the AV system as well as a stringent maintenance regime. Detailed coordination was required to ensure that the on-going maintenance costs could be kept to a minimum, particularly where skilled trades are at a premium in a regional town like Newman.
