WGE were engaged as the electrical, hydraulic and vertical transportation consultants for the Rockingham General Hospital Redevelopment which is located 47km south of Perth. This 18 hectare hospital campus underwent major redevelopment which has transformed it from a 71 bed secondary hospital to a 228 bed general hospital.

The hospital redevelopment included the following elements:

  • 10 bed high dependency units and a 30 bed medical ward
  • Emergency paediatric and adult short stay unit
  • 15 bed rehab, 15 bed geriatric evaluation & management and a 30 bed medical surgical wards
  • 4 operating theatres and assisted recovery suites
  • Central sterilising services department
  • Preoperative / day surgery unit
  • Chemotherapy and ambulatory care unit
  • Maternity, birthing and obstetrics wards
  • Hospital in the home, pharmacy and pathology collection
  • Consulting suites and administration
  • Medical imaging suites

In addition to the above, WGE’s work included the electrical installation of a new 30 bed mental health inpatient unit. WGE were also engaged to carry out the design and documentation of the chemical, biological and radiological lockdown of the hospital.

The extensive electrical works incorporated an upgrade of the site power supply from low to high voltage including installation of three new 1 MVA transformers and two diesel generators within two substations.

Hydraulics services were completed over three stages and included an upgrade of all existing main site infrastructure services such as water, fire, sewer and stormwater. Main design aspects within the building included a large scale central hot water plant to supply the entire hospital including a central reverse osmosis treatment plant and reticulation throughout the building.

This major redevelopment has enabled Rockingham General Hospital to better service the needs of Perth’s south metropolitan community and ensured its ability to sustain generations to come.
