WGE were commissioned by SCT Logistics and DZine Construction Group for the design of the new SCT Logistics intermodal rail freight logistics centre. SCT logistics are Australia’s largest private rail freight operator operating facilities in nine locations across five states. The new facility sits within the Bromelton State Development Area south west of Brisbane. The site has direct access to the Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne mainline controlled by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).

The project involved:

  • Approximately 500,000m3 of earthworks
  • Construction of a new 3km rail siding
  • Mainline turnout works including grade separation retaining wall
  • New intersection with the State controlled road (Beaudesert Boonah Road),
  • 6km of estate access road
  • Seven large multi-cell culverts up to 2.1m in diameter
  • 300m long logistics warehouse
  • Over 2.1Ha of hardstand

WGE’s involvement included:

  • Civil earthworks design
  • Road and intersection design including pavements
  • Stormwater drainage, culverts and flood analysis
  • Retaining wall design within the ARTC mainline corridor
  • Car parks and hardstands
  • Intersection street lighting

Project challenges:

Due to the client’s schedule the construction timeframe was very tight. The planning approval was lodged in December 2015 and approved in June 2016. Construction commenced in June 2016 and the first train arrived as scheduled in January 2017 just seven months later.

Due to the time constraints, construction and design were commenced concurrently. The construction contractor initially commenced bulk earthworks using digital models while drawings were prepared. This allowed significant progress of the bulk earthworks while the remaining design continued.
