WGE specialist lighting was formed at the beginning of 2014 and the new Melbourne office fitout was the first project for the new team.

The architect wanted to convey WGE’s work in building services by creating an industrial look with exposed ducting and cabling. The lighting design replicates this aesthetic with ‘pipe lights’ providing functional lighting to breakout areas. Suspended LED extrusions randomly march through the lift lobby to encourage visitors through to reception. The fibre optic sculpture over the reception desk reinforces the idea of exposed services and defines the area. Large saucer pendants in the boardroom offer a comfortable ambience and a striking statement. The custom industrial WGE signage in the breakout space encapsulates Wood & Grieve’s ‘work hard-play hard’ ethos; after hours the signage is put in to ‘party mode’ with colour changing and sequencing functionality.

WGE’s sustainability section also had a strong influence in the design, with their driving factor to achieve 6 Star GreenStar status. We managed to keep power density to under 4.5W/m² (i.e. half the NCC allowance) and introduce motion-activated sensors, daylight dimming and timeclock control. Workspaces are delineated from the breakout areas through the application of warm versus cool colour temperatures.
