Willows Shopping Town Redevelopment

Willows Shopping Town is a major regional shopping centre located in Thuringowa Central, South West of Townsville’s CBD.

The redevelopment project consisted of the:

  • Refurbishing and upgrading of the existing Willows centre “to present to its customers a contemporary lifestyle shopping experience that is a total retail offer. Emphasis is on extensive choice in a relaxing stress-free environment that is convenient, comfortable & functional” (from Dexus Project Brief).
  • Development of a new mall that increased the centre’s GLA by 12,500m² to 37, 448m²
  • Redevelopment of the food court

WGE provided mechanical, electrical and fire protection services for this project, with mechanical additionally looking after the vertical transportation services.

An energy simulation exercise was also carried out to determine the most cost effective insulation and glazing systems to ensure building fabric compliance with the energy efficiency requirements of the Business Council of Australia (BCA).

The electrical team successfully overcame a major challenge when an existing substation needed to be relocated. The team successfully achieved this with minimal disruption to the operation of the shopping centre.

Shortly following the completion of the redevelopment project, WGE was again commissioned to provide Development Application advice for the upcoming Stage 2 extension of the shopping centre. This recently led to WGE being appointment for the mechanical, electrical, fire protection, hydraulic and vertical transportation consulting services for the northern extension project which is currently in design phase.
