The Work Zone development comprises two seven storey office towers in a campus style environment in the Perth CBD fringe. The buildings are mirrored about the eccentric cores which feature glazed lift cars and shafts overlooking the central landscaped courtyard and providing glimpses of the internal workspace.
The building was developed by Charter Hall, with the design team novated to Broad Construction Services (WA) during the early stages of design development for completion as a Design and Construct process. This allowed the preferred construction methodology to be incorporated into the design during the early stages.
The location of the site, high water table, and distinctive design elements (such as an aesthetic glass lift) introduced a number of challenges which were greeted with enthusiasm and successfully overcome.
WGE provided fire engineering and fire protection services for the building, developing an engineering solution which enabled the use of common fire pumps and tanks for the fire sprinkler and hydrant systems in the building, providing significant financial and spatial benefits to the development.
The design of the Perth HQ fitout for Leighton was undertaken as the Work Zone building structure was constructed, and completed in line with the main building programme. The fitout incorporates open stairs linking multiple office levels to encourage collaboration between Leighton and its local subsidiary companies co-located in the building. WGE again undertook the fire engineering and fire protection services, working within the BCA to enable the creative fitout Leighton desired.
