Aptly named the “Jewell of Tasmania”, Saffire Freycinet, located in Coles Bay on the east coast of Tasmania, is a luxury boutique hotel resort.

Designed by renowned local Tasmanian architects, Morris Nunn and Associates (now Circa Architecture), the development consists of 20 suites and a unique main building. WGE provide the mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, fire protection and sustainability services on the project.

Facing south over Great Oyster Bay, the buildings had their challenges in meeting sustainability aspirations, yet maintaining curtain glazing to take full advantage of the views. The distinctive architecture also created several challenges for the engineering design and generated some innovative and creative solutions.

Key features of the development include:

    • 20 boutique suites
    • Day spa retreat and gymnasium
    • 50 seat restaurant
    • Water features and reflection ponds connecting both inside and outside the building
    • Innovative mechanical systems taking advantage of the uniquely shaped roof
    • Complex and sophisticated electrical and lighting design, complimenting the architecture
    • Being fully self-sufficient with respect to water supply and waste water treatment, via water catchment dam and dedicated waste water treatment plant
    • Revegetation of indigenous flora and protection of existing flora and fauna during construction

The development was opened by the Tasmanian Premier, David Bartlett and has been fortunate to receive some fantastic media coverage and win numerous awards.

"The proactive involvement of Wood & Grieve Engineers during all stages of the project, from initial design through to project completion, was a major factor assisting us to successfully deliver this award winning project. We were impressed with the professional and co operative approach undertaken by Wood & Grieve. The high standard of documentation that was prepared by Wood & Grieve provided clear, practical, innovative and economical design solutions within a challenging architectural envelope. From the clients perspective, the project has been a real success story. I can confirm that Wood & Grieve Engineers were very professional, timely and pro active during all project stages. I would like to express appreciation to the Wood & Grieve team leaders Grant Holman and Ben van Niekerk who together led the building services design development process. Wood & Grieve's proactive and responsive approach has been refreshing given the limitation of building services design expertise in Tasmania."
