WGE helps deliver a first for public hygiene

WGE has helped to deliver Australia’s first retractable or ‘pop-up’ urinal in the City of Perth’s busy Northbridge entertainment precinct.

The innovative design, utilised in cities throughout Europe to improve street hygiene, sits hidden below ground during the day and rises into place when late night crowds are at their peak. The urilift houses three self-cleaning urinals and is operated with a remote control.

WGE provided civil, electrical and hydraulics services on the project. The brownfield site contained a number of shallow services including gas, trunk water mains and telecommunications crossing the 60m long proposed gravity sewer alignment.

WGE carried out preliminary design and worked closely with the appointed contractor during construction phase to overcome any unknown obstacles, ensuring design objectives were met.

The pop-up urinal is an Australian first, and was recently featured on Seven’s Sunrise program.
