WGE’s multi-discipline approach realises cost and efficiency benefits at Harrisdale Shopping Centre

The 12,200m2 Harrisdale Shopping Centre is the first stage of a planned town centre in the new Stockland Newhaven residential community in Perth’s south east. WGE’s multi-discipline role included sustainability, electrical, hydraulics, fire protection and fire engineering services for the project, which achieved a 4 Star Green Star Design and As Built Retail V1 Rating.

WGE Project coordinator, Ralf Boepple says that WGE’s multi-discipline approach enabled a high degree of coordination and integration from the start.

“We developed a coordinated set of drawings in-house that was available to other engineering consultants on the project,” said Ralf.

“This approach meant that we could proactively avoid services clashes, and design once, rather than going through round after round of revisions.”

The team agreed on a coordinated services design which delivered a more cost effective and streamlined infrastructure design. A consistent approach to the project’s design life was developed, reducing maintenance expenditure and streamlining capital upgrades over the life of the building.

The centre represents leading innovation with features such as:

  • Building management system that monitors energy, water and gas usage
  • LED lighting design for energy efficiency
  • Performance-based smoke hazard management system to allow for an open mall design without smoke barriers

Shopping centres present a number of unique challenges requiring creative engineering solutions. For Harrisdale, an adaptive design was developed to allow for future expansion of the centre and improve the flexibility of the centre for future changing tenancies.

“We were able to assist the client with coordination of individual tenant requirements to ensure a more efficient placement of tenancies across the centre,” said Ralf.

“This approach delivered cost savings through reducing potential alterations and changes to newly installed systems required to suit different tenant requirements.”
