Young WGE engineer named Australia’s best in sustainability

WGE Engineer Rebecca Dracup has been awarded 2017 Young Environmental Engineer of the Year by Engineers Australia.

The Young Environmental Engineer of the Year award is presented by the Environmental College of Engineers Australia to acknowledge and reward young engineers who demonstrate competence, leadership, positive outcomes, creativity, innovation and community service.

As part of her prize, Rebecca received flights, accommodation, and a ticket to attend the Sustainable Engineering conference from Engineers Australia’s College of Environmental Engineering.
The award was presented at a formal dinner on Wednesday 18 October, after the Engineers Australia Sustainable Engineering Conference held at Engineers Australia in Melbourne.

Rebecca was recognised for:

• Demonstrating engineering competence through her building energy modelling experience
• Her involvement in the creation of WGE’s CChangeAP climate resilience tool was seen as innovative and a great use of technology, and also demonstrated leadership
• Leading environmental initiatives within WGE to promote sustainable office practices and achieve recycling targets
• Her involvement in pro-bono projects through WGE’s partnership with Colab, providing engineering advice to deliver vital community projects that otherwise would not be realised

Rebecca said she was thrilled to accept the award and is looking forward to exciting opportunities in the future.

“The award endorses my efforts both at work, and in the broader community to promote engineering and better sustainability solutions,” she said.

“I am very grateful to EA for the recognition and I hope it will open up new opportunities for my goals in 2018.”

WGE Director Joe Walsh congratulated Rebecca on her outstanding achievement.

“We have always been very proud of Rebecca’s enthusiastic and innovative approach to sustainable engineering and work practices and we are delighted for her efforts to be formally recognised by the College of Environmental Engineering,” he said.
